Lot no. 164
BAUDELAIRE (Charles). Autograph notes, unsigned and attributed to Charles Baudelaire. 2 p., 26.5 x 20.5 cm. Two-page handwritten folio containing various working notes. A note at the bottom of the second page indicates that these are autograph notes by Charles Baudelaire. Not only do the graphological features of the manuscript allow it to be attributed to the poet Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867), but it is also this manuscript that was published as such in the Œuvres complètes, on pages 127 and 128 of volume II of Juvenilia, which brings together various unpublished early texts. The two biographers and editors of Baudelaire's posthumous works, Jacques Crépet and Claude Pichois, are not certain of the date of this folio, but suggest that it predates 1847, as it mentions Baudelaire's mother's maiden name, "Dufays", which the poet definitely stopped using after that date. It is possible that this work is linked to an unfinished anthology project on English literature, carried out with Eugène Crépet and mentioned in the poet's correspondence. In it, Baudelaire describes a booklet of songs in English, for two of which he proposes a translation, "M'aimez-vous, dit Fanny" and "Dans le joyeux mois de mai". He begins by describing the cover of the brochure, listing the names of the singers mentioned and the advertisement for the comfortable beds at a special rate for servants on the back cover. Baudelaire then offers a translation of T.E. Walmisley's song "M'aimez-vous, dit Fanny", followed by a second ditty about the meeting of Phyllis and Corydon. Baudelaire notes his hesitation as to the best possible translation of the last lines of the second ditty, wondering whether "Reine de Mai" should not be preferred to "Dame de Mai". This pastoral was composed by another composer and organist, Benjamin Cooke, for the music, and the English poet Nicholas Breton for the words, written for a festival given in 1591 for Queen Elizabeth I of England. Finally, at the bottom of the second page of the manuscript are diagonal annotations such as "Anne de Boyleyn", "Constantius Fulta", "38. Nouveau chant national", "Père du duc de Wellington", "Weber", "Gluck", "Winchester" and "Mélodie de Thibaut ct de Champagne". These annotations could refer to other Baroque compositions. The folio bears traces of tears that were previously repaired with adhesive tape. Reunion of two sheets of autograph notes by the poet. Tear in the centre of the folio, previously restored. Folds and small tears around the edge of the paper. Height 26.5 cm, width 20.5 cm Expert : Mrs Lou AXMANN
