(48f.) / a-m4 / 41 long lines, gothic car / 170 x 245 mm. Seventh edition in Gothic type, reported by Bechtel. A prose version of an earlier poem whose author is unknown. It tells the story of Baudouin IX, Count of Flanders, who married a devil, was set on the right path by a hermit, then took part in the Crusade and remained a prisoner of the infidels for 25 years. He then returned to Flanders, where his daughter Jeanne, wife of Ferrand of Portugal, had him put to death. A curious, romanticised story of the real Baldwin IX, Count of Flanders, who became Emperor of Constantinople in 1204 and was killed in 1206. A half-page woodcut depicting the author offering his book, a full-page woodcut depicting Baudouin and his diabolical wife, 75 illustrations in the text, 15 of which are repeated, and numerous lettrines of various sizes. Copy probably quoted by Brunet in mar. v. but with 2ff. mended... Only copy listed by USTC. Binding faded, marginal repair to title and one leaf with loss of text picked up in ink, marginal repairs to many other leaves without affecting the text. Provenance: Fairfax Murray (label, no. 25).
