Extremely rare first edition of this chronicle of the exploits of the knight Bayard, written by one of his companions, certainly his secretary, the notary Jacques de Mailles. The volume was carefully printed in Gothic type by Nicolas Couteau on behalf of Galliot du Pré, with the title in red and black, the coat of arms of France woodcut on the verso and numerous initials with a sifted background. The work offers an honest biography of Pierre Terrail, seigneur de Bayard (1476-1524), known as the Chevalier sans peur et sans reproche, with an account of the battles in which he took part, including the Battle of Marignan, fought by François I against the Swiss, recounted in the 60th chapter. It is therefore not only more interesting and more sought-after than Symphorien Champier's highly romanticised epic Les Gestes ensemble la vie du preulx chevalier Bayard, which was published several times in Lyon and Paris between 1524 and 1558, but also rarer, as it was not reprinted until 1616.
