Lot no. 2706
Bavarian Gothic carver (active around 1500)
Corpus Christi
Probably limewood. Christ on the cross as "christo morto" with side wound in expressive corporeality in the three-nail type. The structure of the dying body, the head covered with a crown of thorns and tilted slightly to the left from the viewer's perspective, and the loincloth are strongly reminiscent of the works of famous Bavarian carvers such as Tilman Riemenschneider. See, for example, the large Christ on the Cross by Riemenschneider in the parish church of Steinach an der Saale, in Bad Bocklet/Bavaria. Remains of the original version preserved under the later overpainting. Cross beam lost. H. 60 cm.
Provenance: Dissolution of an important German private collection - part II.
