It seems that he believed he would receive 5 per cent on the sale price of Martinique, which is not customary here (...) and which I could not do without harming the interests of my children (...). The happiness of my children is the only thing that still matters to me (...). I have suffered cruel misfortunes; my happiness is in the grave; but I am a very happy mother (...). She is enjoying her time in the countryside, surrounded by a small circle of close friends. She mentions Princess Charlotte de Rohan, her daughter Eugénie, and her new husband Auguste, as well as the Christmas gifts she is preparing: I am a mother and guardian, and nothing in the world could make me stray from my duties, which I have always fulfilled with scrupulous accuracy.
