Lot no. 205
BEAUHARNAIS (Eugène de). Letter signed "Eugène Napoléon" as Viceroy of Italy, addressed to the future Marshal Jacques-Alexandre-Bernard Law de Lauriston. Milan, 1st May 1806. One p. in-4, some traces of moisture with ink transfer from another missive on the last blank page. Following the campaign of Austerlitz, the Treaty of Presburg signed between France, Austria and Russia allocated Venetia and its former Dalmatian possessions to the Kingdom of Italy organised by Napoleon I. In May 1806, General Molitor was given the task of occupying Dalmatia, and General Lauriston the task of taking control of Ragusa. However, a Russian fleet landed an expeditionary force which came to lay siege to this port city, and Lauriston owed his salvation only to a ruse on Molitor's part which enabled the siege to be lifted at the end of the month. " ... I hope that you have now received the various consignments which have been sent to you & which should ensure your position in the country. Last night I received a letter from His Majesty which contained these words: Write to Lauriston that he should remain in Dalmatia &, if he was already in Milan, that he should wait there for the new orders which I will send him within a few days. As soon as I have received these orders, I will hasten to send them to you. I hope that if they keep you away from us, it will at least be so that we can join you. Surely you have no doubt of the pleasure I would have in seeing you again and in renewing my old feelings for you...". Jointly, 2 copper-engraved portraits of Prince Eugène.
