Bed in lacquered and gilded wood, with mother-of-pearl inlays and brass appliqués, as well as oil-painted decoration. 19th century. Philippines or Anglo-Indian, made for export or for colonial customers.
Headboard dimensions: 87 x 145 cm. Footboard dimensions: 72 x 142 cm.
A magnificent piece of furniture, featuring on its headboard an oil painting of a bullfighting scene with mounted garrochistas in the dehesa, executed with remarkable quality.
Richly ornamented with polychrome mother-of-pearl inlays forming floral garlands and clusters of grapes, alternating with delicate gilded decoration.
This bed formed part of the exhibition “The World of the Manila Shawl: From Asia to Spain, via Latin America”, held at Casa de América in Madrid from 9 to 25 October in the halls of the Palacio de Linares.
