Bedeutende Commode époque Louis XIV Schildpatt, graviertes Messing und Ebenholz auf Weichholz und Eiche, vergoldete ziselierte Bronze- und punzierte Messingbeschläge. Höfische Kommode mit drei Schüben in drei Reihen mit der Optik von sechs Schüben. Die Frontmitte und die gerundeten Ecken betont durch Marketerie und Bronzebeschläge. Die hinteren Ecken pilasterähnlich vorkragend. Alle Architekturteile durch profilierte Messingbänder voneinander abgesetzt. Ältere Restaurierungen über Rissen und Fehlstellen, einige Stellen mit Ablösungen der Messingeinlagen, Klebespuren, Rückwand ersetzt. H 81, B 133, T 65,5 cm. Diese mit reicher Boullemarketerie in Premierpartie mit rot hinterlegtem Schildpatt gearbeitete, elegant geschwungene Kommode mit ihren auf die Marketerie abgestimmten Beschlägen reiht sich in eine große Zahl fast identisch gearbeiteter Möbel aus dem Werk Nicolas Sageots ein. Trotz der Bekanntheit der Möbel war die Zuordnung an Sageot nicht einfach, weil es sehr wenige gestempelte Möbel von ihm gibt und seine Stücke genau wie die aller seiner Konkurrenten einem modischen Zeitgeist entsprechen. Demzufolge waren einige ursprünglich Noel Gerard zugeschrieben. Dieses Exemplar entspricht der seit wenigen Jahren bekannten Typologie von Sageots Möbeln. Die Schübe sind jeweils mit dem identisch symmetrischen Marketeriebild versehen, das sich auch auf den Seiten findet, gekennzeichnet durch reiches Blattwerk, Ranken und kleine Käfer. Die Platte bietet ein ähnliches Bild. Festons mit Blumen, Bandelwerk, verschiedene Tierdarstellungen und Maskarons umrahmen ein Mittelmedaillon mit der Darstellung des Urteil des Midas im musikalischen Wettstreit zwischen Apoll und Pan. (Apoll gewinnt, dies wird von Midas angezweifelt, und Apoll verwandelt seine Ohren in Eselsohren.) Die Marketerie folgt Vorlagen von Jean Bérain. Nicolas Sageot, 1706 Meister geworden, gilt neben André Charles Boulle als einer der bedeutendsten Ebenisten seiner Zeit. 1711 heiratete er Marie-Brigitte, die Tochter des Ebenisten Jacques Roussel. 1720 schloss er seine Werkstatt und verkaufte seine Warenbestände. Geistig umnachtet lebte er ab 1723 bis zu seinem Tod 1731 in einer Nervenheilanstalt. This elegantly formed piece of furniture with red tortoiseshell premierpartie Boulle marquetry and perfectly matched mountings is related to a significant number of near identical pieces from the workshop of Nicolas Sageot. Despite how well known these pieces are, it was still not easy to securely attribute them to Sageot. Very few stamped pieces by this maker are known, and his designs follow the same contemporary fashions as those of his competitors. Therefore, some works were originally attributed to Noel Gerard. The present work corresponds to the recently established typology of Sageot´s furniture. The drawers are all decorated with the same identical symmetrical marquetry that is found on the sides of the piece. The pattern is formed of stylised tendrils populated by tiny insects. A similar style is used for the top, with floral festoons and strapwork interspersed with animals and mascarons surrounding a central medallion depicting Midas judging the music competition of Apollo and Pan. In the story Apollo wins, but Midas doubts this, and Apollo transforms his ears into those of a donkey. The marquetry follows designs by Jean Bérain. Nicolas Sageot became a master in 1706, and is considered one of the most accomplished cabinetmakers of his time alongside André Charles Boulle. He married Marie-Brigitte, the daughter of the cabinetmaker Jacques Roussel, in 1711. He closed his workshop and sold off its contents in 1720 after becoming mentally ill, remaining in an asylum from 1723 until his death in 1731.
