Lot no. 872
Significant monumental KPM Berlin vase with soft painting, so-called Victoria vase. Octagonal base with recessed round foot and projecting nodus. Above an arching ovoid body with a slightly indented rim. Removable lid attachment in a foot repeating and perfectly shaped form. A pastel-coloured arrangement of blossoming and budding peonies on both sides of the wall on a delicate yellowish-green ground, in virtuoso soft painting. Flanked by two round profile portraits of young ladies, surrounded by splendidly exuberant floral and ornamental relief gold borders and individual motifs, which are expressed on all sides of the base and the bodies on a delicate mint green, white and rose-coloured ground, partly in cartouches. Designed by Julius Wilhelm Mantel with the collaboration of his son Louis, 1860, model no. 2214, minimal residue, sceptre and painter's mark. Total h. 105 cm. Vase h. 85 cm. Centre h. 22 cm. According to the model book, this is "A vase in modified Greek style, called Victoria vase, smaller size". It honours Victoria of Great Britain, who married Emperor Frederick III in 1858. As technically and artistically representative of KPM-Berlin, Victoria vases with soft painting in various sizes were prominently presented at world exhibitions. Consequently, the painting of comparable pieces was carried out by leading soft-painters such as Franz Aulich or painting supervisor Paul Miethe, who often developed a decorative or painting template. Similar ceremonial vases are today highlights of important collections, including the Sabet Collection and the Werner Collection of the Order of St John in Berlin. Cf. Dietz, Sabet Collection, pp. 182-185 and pp. 468-71; cat. Exhib. KPM Berlin 1763-2013, pp. 102-103. An important monumental "Victoriavase" with gold decorated reliefs and virtuosically painted with flowers in so-called "Weichmalerei". Minor restored. Sceptre and painter's mark. KPM-Berlin. Circa 1900.
