Important intermediate gold lidded goblet with allegories of the four seasons
Colourless glass, cut. Slightly recessed disc foot with rosette base, the baluster shaft faceted or honeycomb-faceted, multi-faceted dome, corresponding lid with high, articulated knob. Finely etched, splendid intermediate gold decoration, partially also intermediate silver decoration: in the bowl a figurative frieze of four youths with their attributes as allegories of the seasons, below an acanthus leaf border, the lip rim accentuated by a toothed edge, in the base of the bowl a round medallion with Bavarian diamonds, framed by radial acanthus leaves; in the lid a round medallion with scrollwork. H. 27 cm.
Provenance: North German private collection, acquired from Galerie Neuse, Bremen, at the 22nd Hanover-Herrenhausen Art and Antiques Fair in 1990 (purchase price DM 15,000).
