BEAUTIFUL SET OF TRAVEL CUTLERY IN NIELLO SILVER Ottoman Empire, Greece, 18th century Comprising a small knife and a small fork with gilt decoration, in a fine silver case with engraved, nielloed and gilt decoration, including a Greek inscription possibly dated, the blade of the knife also inscribed in Greek, hallmarked. Length: 17.5 cm (knife and fork); 25.5 cm (set) The decoration on the scabbard is reminiscent of the work produced by Istanbul artists during the reign of Sultan Ahmet III (r.1703-30), in particular the pen trays with floral, engraved, niello and gilded decoration. See for example a pen box in the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, bearing the Sultan's tughra (inv. 57.627).
