BEAUTIFUL SET OF TRAVEL CUTLERY IN NIELLO SILVER
Ottoman Empire, Greece, 18th century
Comprising a small knife and a small fork with gilt decoration, in a fine silver case with engraved, nielloed and gilt decoration, including a Greek inscription possibly dated, the blade of the knife also inscribed in Greek, hallmarked.

The decoration on the scabbard is reminiscent of the work produced by Istanbul artists during the reign of Sultan Ahmet III (r.1703-30), in particular the pen trays with floral, engraved, niello and gilded decoration. See for example a pen box in the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, bearing the Sultan's tughra (inv. 57.627).
