The panetier of Normandy was a high dignitary of the duchy of Normandy during the ducal period whose office was to serve the duke at major ceremonies. In a charter dated 1170, Henry II of England granted this office to Ouen de Malpalu, which involved not only serving the duke, but also guarding the weights within the jurisdiction of the city of Rouen and its suburbs. Until 1256, the panetier of Rouen (or the panetier of the Duke of Normandy) collected various taxes on bakeries, breads and their transport. The mayor of Rouen and the town's inhabitants obtained from Saint Louis the transfer of these taxes to the town, in exchange for an annual annuity of twenty Tournois pounds payable in half on Saint Michael's Day and at Christmas in favour of the panetier Laurent le Chambellan. Unlike other offices in the Duchy of Normandy, the office appears to have been hereditary from the ducal era, and then purely honorary, but at a time that remains to be determined. Since at least the 13th century, possession of this office was also linked to the transmission of the land and seigneury of Gouy (Seine-Maritime). (wikipedia).
