Lot no. 436
BELGIQUE - BELGIUM Leopold I (1831-1865). 40 francs Gold, edge in position B 1841, Brussels. Av. LEOPOLD FIRST KING OF THE BELGIANS. Head laureate right, signature BRAEMT F. Rv. Within an oak wreath: 40 FRANCS (date) and star. M.A5 - Dupr.173 - KM.B23.1 - Fr.403 ; Gold - 12.86 g - 26 mm - 6 h Top Pop: this is the only graded example! PCGS XF45 (55951736). The edge is poorly inscribed. Small marks on the listels and in the fields: this example has circulated. Slight golden patina. Almost Superb. According to Dupriez: Gold being slightly more expensive than silver at the time, very few 40-franc coins were struck in 1834, 1835, 1838 and 1841, as well as a very limited number of 20-franc coins of the same denominations and dates. They are not mentioned in the tables of current coinage in the "reports" of the Mint Commissioners. Consequently, they are considered to be proofs which, in any case, did not enter into circulation.
