Lieutenant-Colonel Herman Kreps was born in Ledeberg (Ghent) on 28 January 1923 and died in Detmold on 26 June 1963. In 1941, he crossed the Channel and joined the Royal Air Force. In 1944, he became a navigator and joined 254 Squadron. He formed a crew with another Belgian pilot, Alexandre Gendebien.
On 26 June 1963, Herman Kreps was at the controls of a C-119 for a parachuting exercise. While flying over a training area for British soldiers, the aircraft was hit by mortar fire and crashed near Detmold in Germany.
