Lot no. 1048
(Belgium - Flanders - Ten Duinen Abbey) - Charter relating to a donation made to the Ten Duinen Abbey. 4 April 1227 1 f. (15,5 x 21 cm), on vellum, in Latin, with 4 pendants seals (with ms. annot. on back, 1 seal missing). Seals in very good condition. Henricus Hevelbern (Evelbarn) gave in charity to the Cistercian Ten Duinen Abbey 75 measures ("mensurae") of "Coppenwic" (Coppinge?, according Gysseling) in the presence of Henricus, Abbot of the Premonstratensian Abbey of St. Nicholas in Veurne, Jordanus and Gerardus, respectively Provost and Dean of the St. Walburga Church in Veurne, and Hugo, "miles de Lorengh" (= Loringe, near Koksijde). The seal of the Abbey of St. Nicholas in Veurne (an abbot standing, mitred, holding a crozier and a book) is probably the oldest known. For the "Monasticon belge" and "Inventaires des sceaux de la Flandre", the oldest dates from the 14th c. Ref. De Raadt, Sceaux armoriés, IV:441. - Demay, Inventaires des sceaux de la Flandre, II:259. - Monasticon belge, III(4):372. - Gysseling, Toponymisch Woordenboek, 572.
