Lot no. 96
A beautiful pair of gilded consoles, in the Baroque style, of exceptional scenic impact.
The consoles are distinguished by the quality of the carving and the narrative force of the sculptures that support them centrally: a pair of allegorical figures, modelled in the round, entwined in an intense and theatrical embrace. Two mercury mirrors in a mixtilinear frame positioned at the cusp.
The figures, probably allegories of Strength, Love or Abundance, act as supporting elements like real sculptural caryatids, giving the whole an almost architectural presence. The finely carved faces show deep, human expressions.
The upper band, embellished with a rich decoration of vine leaves and bunches of grapes, frames the wooden top lined with red velvet.
Mercury mirrors decorated with anthropomorphic figures on the sides supporting a shelf with the client's initials 'PS' (Pasquale Sigillo, Naples).
