Lot no. 158
BENJAMIN (Joseph-Germain-Mathieu Roubaud, known as). The road to posterity. I. People of letters. - II. Comedians. Paris, Aubert, s.d. [ca. 1842]. Set of two lithographed panoramas in black (approximately 139 x 27 cm) folded into 2 volumes in-4, half Russian green leather, title in gilt Gothic letters on the first cover, smooth mute spine (Publisher's binding). First edition of these two rare lithographed panoramas, addressed to the Aubert printing house. The first caricatures Romantic writers and poets, with Hugo riding at the head with a banner in his hand reading "le laid c'est le beau" ("the ugly is the beautiful"), followed by Gautier, Lamartine, Dumas, Balzac, Vigny and others. The second panorama is devoted to comedians, such as Rachel, Debureau, Frédérick Lemaître, Beauvalet, etc.
Marginal restorations to three plates; scattered light foxing; a good copy nonetheless. Without the third panorama.
