Lot no. 53
Benoit GYSEMBERGH (1954-2013) Simone Veil, Auschwitz, 2004 Set of 2 photographs Later silver prints, on satin-finish RC paper, from the original negatives Numbered 1/10 and 2/10 respectively 40 x 60 cm and 60 x 40 cm Provenance: Paris Match iconographic archives A Paris Match certificate of authenticity for each print will be given to the buyer. On 22 December 2004, 60 years after her liberation, Simone Veil returned to Auschwitz-Birkenau. The death camp where, as a teenager, she spent the most terrible year of her life. A hell from which her mother, father and brother never returned. She agreed to be accompanied by Alain Genestar, editorial director of Paris Match, on condition that her children and grandchildren would also be there. It's an incredible testimony to the resilience of the woman who became the first full minister in the Fifth Republic and brought in the law decriminalising abortion. Sixty years after her liberation, Simone Veil took her family to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Poland. In a symbolic coincidence, two photos were superimposed due to a technical fault with the camera, resulting in a telescoping of images and memories on the film: Simone Veil, alone, walking through the camp, with a superimposition of her face surrounded by her sons and grandchildren (from left to right, Pierre-François, Lucas, Sébastien, Isabelle and Aurélien). All lots are sold inclusive of VAT. VAT, at the current rate of 20%, is included in the auction price. This VAT is recoverable by the French professional. It is reimbursable for buyers from outside the EU on presentation of proof of export from the EU or for professional bidders providing proof of a valid intra-Community number and a document proving delivery in the Member State.
