BÉRENGER (Jean Pierre). Histoire de Genève, depuis son origine jusqu'à nos jours. S.l. [Lausanne], 1772-1773. 6 volumes in-12, marbled basane, smooth spine decorated, red edges (Binding of the period). First edition.
A self-taught Genevan, Jean Pierre Bérenger (1737-1807) gave up his trade as a goldsmith for a career as a journalist at the Journal de Genève and as a man of letters, making himself the spokesman for the Natives (born in Geneva but not bourgeois) and their fight for political equality. His Histoire de Genève was polemical and extolled democracy. Like many of his other pamphlets, it was condemned to destruction by the authorities.
A copy of the Geneva diplomat Jean-Armand Tronchin (1736-1813), member of the Conseil des Deux-Cents et des Soixante, ambassador of the Republic of Geneva in Paris from 1787 to 1792, with a bookplate from the Bessinge estate, near Geneva. It is described in the Tronchin sale catalogue (1987, n°248).
Slight foxing, minor defects to headpieces.
