Émile Bernard, one of the most dazzling figures of painting at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, is born on the 28th of April 1868 in Lille. During his education in the studio of the academical painter Fernand Cormon, Bernard succeeds early in attracting attention with his images among his painter colleagues, among others the artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Vincent van Gogh and alter also Paul Gauguin. After numerous stays in Brittany (along with Gauguin the founder of the later co-called School of Pont Aven) and a pointilistic phase, Émile Bernard develops a new visual language and pictorial style, marked by clear dark outlines, with which pictorial objects and colours are demarcated, which will later go down in art history as "cloisonnism". In this, the demarcation of objects and colour areas with dark outlines plays an important role. Thus, Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin are inspired by Bernard's new ideas and a long and productive friendhip between the artists arises. In 1891 Bernard and Gauguin go on separate ways, as the latter is celebrated by the avant-garde as the sole founder of Symbolism. Bernard leaves France for the time being in 1893 - he will return in 1904 - and travels to Florence, Istanbul, Cairo and through Spain. During a short-time return to France between 1901 and 1902, Bernard exhibits in the Amboise Vollard gallery. This proves to be advantegous for the artist, as Vollard also sells several of his works. Returned definitely in February 1904, Bernard travels to Aix-en-Provence and meets the already quite elderly painter Paul Cézanne. Bernard stays with him for four weeks and publishes articles consisting of their conversations in July of the same year. After Bernard's departure an exchange of letters arises until Cézanne's death. These letters and his memories were also published by Bernard in book form. Émile Bernard dies on the 16th of April 1941 in his studio in Paris at the age of 89. The climax of his oeuvre are the intensively coloured, decorative pictures from the late 1880s, with which Bernard - in dialogue with Gauguin - founded Symbolism in painting. The people of Brittany, their originality and religiousness, but also the rough nature inspired Bernard to his most important works. Bernard is considered a pioneer for modern painting. But also the bathers, mostly three, four, or more female nudes just before or after bathing in free nature, cross Émile Bernard's work again and again. Independent of the artistic phase of the artist, this motif seems to play an important role. From the early work, dated 1888, until just before his death, dated 1940, this motif is picked up again and again.
