Second edition of this excellent account of India and Kashmir. The illustration comprises 13 plates out of text, including 2 frontispieces, 3 fold-out maps and 8 plates out of text, some fold-out, of costumes, scenes, ceremonies, elephant fighting, fakir, etc. The great journey that the physician François Bernier (1620-1688) made to the Orient from 1656 to 1669, the account of which he published for the first time in 1670, took him to the Court of the Great Mogul in Agra. Appointed as physician to Shah Djilan, he witnessed the revolt of his sons and the accession of Aurengzeb. He became attached to the person of this sovereign, and in his wake visited Dehli, Lahore, Kashmir and part of the Himalayan foothills. "No traveller before the author had visited Kashmir," wrote Boucher de la Richarderie. An exceptional copy bound by Nicolas-Denis Derome. Spines uniformly sunned.
