Bound in long-grained red morocco; the original boards, probably damaged, have been covered with marbled paper. Spine with gilt caissons. Large piece of red morocco on the first board, with the gilt title framed by a gilt roulette. Gilt edges. Second edition; the first, published in a very small number in 1815 and rapidly sold out, justified this second edition, which is the only one to have appeared at auction 6 or 7 times since the middle of the 20th century. Illustrated with 49 superb finely coloured aquatint plates. Most of the views are by Friedrich Lose and were engraved by Carolina Lose. A list of 46 plates is given at the beginning of the work, and all are present in our copy, which also includes three additional plates: La cascata nella valle di Villa in Lezzeno, Sorgente del Fiume Latte and Il Fiume Latte. Copies that went on sale contained between 35 and 50 plates. The copy of this edition held by the Biblioteca Nazionale Braidense in Milan contains 56 plates; Brunet and Graesse describe the first edition as containing 50 plates, although the numbers range from I to LX. Worldcat does not list any copies of this work. Bookplate of the 2nd Baronet Andrew Vincent Corbet lithographed and dated 1835 on the flyleaf, alongside that of Peter Obergfell (the baronet of Moreton Corbet is located in the county of Buckingham in England). Friedrich Lose (Görlitz 1776 - Milan 1833) was a German artist who specialised in landscape views engraved by his wife Caroline, who was the daughter of the Court of Appeal Councillor Seyfried Ernst von Schlieben. A magnificent and very rare album of the great Italian lakes at the foot of the Alps.
