Lot no. 34
BEZANÇON (Germain de). Les Médecins à la censure, ou Entretiens sur la médecine Paris, Gontier, 1677. In-12, ivory vellum (contemporary binding). 6 ff, 370 pp, 1 f. privilege.
First edition, "very rare" according to Guibert, Bibl. des œuvres de Molière, II, pp. 810-811. "It is an account of several discussions held by three learned persons on the truth and usefulness of Medicine" (Introd.). "In short, it is a defence of the medicine so strongly criticised and of the medical profession of the time. From the very first interview, it talks about Le Malade imaginaire, the role Molière wanted to play in his play. On page 311, we also find this very clever retort by Sosandre (a serious doctor taken from the Preface to the comedy of Tartuffe): "What in the world is not corrupted every day, there is nothing so innocent that men cannot bring crime to it, no art so salutary that it is not capable of reversing intentions, etc.". (Guibert).
A very fine copy, from the library of Nordkirchen Castle in North Rhine-Westphalia (Count Ferdinand de Plettenberg) ex-libris.
