Lot no. 2466
[BIBLE]. Biblia sacra ex Santis Pagnini tralatione. Lyon, Gaspar Trechsel for Hugues de la Porte, 1542. In-folio bound in full tan calf, spine ribbed and gilt with repeated crowned coats of arms (mace and ermine spot), double gilt fillet at the edges, in modern slipcase (Binding of the period). [6] ff, 269 pp (notated 267), [39] ff. decorated with a title finial and historiated lettering, all in woodcut. Text on two columns. First edition corrected and enlarged with annotations and corrections by Michel Servet on the translation by Sanctis Pagnini. This work was placed on the index because of Servet's controversial commentary, which was considered heretical. Servet was eventually arrested at Calvin's request, tried and executed for his anti-Trinitarian views.
Signed by Jacques Auguste de Thou (1553-1617). A magistrate, jurist, statesman, historian, humanist and, of course, bibliophile, he is known for his extensive scholarly and encyclopaedic library of just over 10,000 titles.
A charming copy of authoritative provenance, bound in the Rohan-Soubise family coat of arms.
Handwritten bookplates Jaq. Aug. Thuani of Jacques Auguste de Thou, that of Ramuel and finally that of Bishop Suthe Barrington of Durham.
