Lot no. 5
[Coptic Bible]. Ethiopian Bible written in Guezze, [130] f. calligraphed on vellum, bound in sumac-tanned leather on wood boards and decorated with cold motifs, undated, 19th century (20 x 14.5 cm). Manuscript with 26 lines per leaf composed in two inks and illustrated with 7 full-page compositions, skilfully executed with great taste: the Last Supper, the Virgin and Child, Saint Michael slaying the dragon, the four Evangelists, the Magi, the Coronation of the Virgin, Saint Peter accompanied by Saint John and Saint Paul. The work opens with the Book of Psalms, and the addition of interlinear notes in Amharic script and on the cover suggest that it was used for special ritual purposes. Marks on several pages, a tear without missing on the illustration of the Magi, other minor defects, good condition overall.
