Lot no. 6
[BIBLE]. Libri Salomonis, Proverbia, Ecclesiastes, Canticum canticorum. Liber Sapientiæ. Ecclesiasticus. Paris, [Yolande Bonhomme], widow of Thielman Kerver, 1535. In-16, marbled basane, spine decorated, red edges (18th century binding). Very rare edition of the sapiental books printed in Paris with an attractive title in a wood-engraved portico.
Untraceable issue addressed to Yolande Bonhomme. The USTC cites no copy ("lost book") and Brigitte Moreau only one, kept in the Troyes library. There is another issue addressed to Simon de Colines, of which the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal has a copy (Delaveau & Hillard, no. 1953).
Daughter of the Parisian printer and bookseller Pasquier Bonhomme and wife of Thielman Kerver, Yolande Bonhomme succeeded her husband when he died in 1522 and published numerous works (between 136 and 200, it is estimated) until her own death in 1557, which she frequently published under her husband's name. She is known as the first woman to have published the Bible, in 1526.
Fine copy.
One spine and three corners worn, ink stain on f. 80v, some scattered soiling. Missing the last leaf (n8).
Moreau, IV, n°1206 - USTC 185520.
