Lot no. 37
BIDLOO (Govard). Anatomia humani corporis. Centum et quinque tabulis per artificiosiss. G. de Lairesse... Amsterdam, widow of J. à Sonneren, heirs of J. à Dick, Henrici and widow of Th. Boom, 1685. Large folio, vellum decorated with cold decoration, spine with cold decorated nerves (contemporary binding). 7 ff. n.e., 105 full-page plates with 62 ff. n.e. of accompanying explanatory text.
First edition of the most spectacular anatomy book of its time.
This is the first printing of the illustrations by G. de Lairesse, which will appear in a Dutch edition of the work in 1690 and in an English edition in 1700. It is decorated with an allegorical frontispiece, a portrait of the author by Abraham Bloteling, 105 anatomical etchings by Gérard de Lairesse and rich typographical ornamentation.
The Flemish painter and engraver G. de Lairesse (1641-1711) had introduced to Holland the style of Poussin and Lorrain, which became very popular in the country. In these dissection plates, he shows the full extent of his style, combining great anatomical accuracy with the meditative poses of the dissected subjects, in still-life settings with surgical utensils, clothes, ties, wedges, etc., which produce a very baroque effect of realism.
Norman 231 - Krivatsy 1238 (whose portrait is missing).
