BION (Nicolas).Traité de la construction et des principaux usages des instrumens de mathematique. Paris : veuve de Jean Boudot, Jacques Collombat, Jean Boudot fils, 1709. - In-8, 215 x 135 : (4 ff.), 349 pp, (2 ff.), 28 plates. Original edition, dedicated to the Duc d'Orléans, of this important treatise by the engineer Nicolas Bion (1652-1733).
The author presents this work as a complete guide to mathematical instruments, organised in eight books. It covers basic instruments (compasses, rulers, squares), measuring tools (proportional compasses, gauges), cabinet instruments (microscopes, magnet stones), surveying and artillery tools, astronomical instruments (inspired by La Hire and Cassini), navigation instruments, and finally sundials and elementary clocks.
The edition is illustrated with a band bearing the arms of the Duc d'Orléans, signed by Nicolas Guérard, and 28 copper-engraved plates strategically placed at the end of each section to illuminate the text. The author's aim was to make science accessible to everyone, from novices to enthusiasts, by combining technical rigour with educational clarity.
Hinges cracked, head cover missing, corners dull. The arms of the Duc d'Orléans have been scratched.
