BLIGH (William). Voyage to the South Sea, undertaken by order of His Britannic Majesty to introduce the breadfruit tree and other useful plants to the West Indies. With an account of the revolt on board his ship, etc. Paris, Garnery, Buisson, Desenne, Blanchon, 1792. In-8, marbled calf, spine decorated, smooth edges (pastiche binding). First edition of the French translation by François Soulès.
This "extremely important work" (Hill) contains the official account of the expedition of the H.M.S. Bounty, which, under the command of Lieutenant William Bligh, was tasked with collecting breadfruit plants in Tahiti and transporting them to the British West Indies, where they would be used as food for slaves.
It also includes a revised version of the account of the mutiny on the Bounty that made the expedition famous, which was first published in 1790, in English and then in French translation, under the title Relation de l'enlèvement du navire Le Bounty.
The illustration comprises three folded plates, including a figure of the breadfruit and two maps showing the northern coast of Tahiti and the route taken by Bligh in the longboat of the Bounty from Tofô to Timor.
Some stains and minor paper repairs.
