Flowers - Art Nouveau
Fischer-Coerlin, Ernst Albert
Plant study. 1900. watercolour and gouache on wove paper. Visible dimensions 45.7 x 60.5 cm. Signed and dated. Firmly mounted on support, framed under passepartout and glass.
Provenance: Private collection, Berlin. - Ernst Albert Fischer-Cörlin studied in Berlin at the Prussian Academy of Arts under its director Eduard Daege and Julius Schrader, who was closely associated with the Düsseldorf School. He then worked as a master student of the history painter Anton von Werner. His understanding of art and his painting style were strongly influenced by academia. The late 19th and early 20th centuries were characterised by a growing interest in nature, botany and marine biology, strongly influenced by scientific progress and discoveries. Artists such as Ernst Haeckel with his work "Art Forms of Nature" combined art and science to show the aesthetic beauty of natural forms. The algae depicted, with their flowing lines and the complexity of their structure, symbolise the order and harmony in nature, as expressed in Art Nouveau art in particular. - Occasionally with faint and barely noticeable pale brown spots. Very good overall. Detailed, dynamic composition in naturalistic colouring, the colours fresh.
