Lot no. 17
BOCCACE. Genealogie cum micantissimis arborum effigiacionibus cuiusque gentilis dei progeniem, non tam aperte quam summatim declarantibus cumque præfœcunda omnium quæ in hoc libro sunt ad finem tabula. Paris, Denis Roce and Ludwig Hornken, 1511. In-folio, embossed fawn calf on wooden boards, two large scrolls of fantastic animals and foliage set in bold fillets framing a central rectangle composed of three vertical scrolls, smooth edges, traces of clasps (16th century binding). A sumptuous and rare Parisian edition, printed in Roman type and embellished with Denis Roce's mark on the title (in red and black), a full-page woodcut family tree at the head of each of the first thirteen books, and large and small initials with a sifted background. The fifteen books of the Genealogia deorum gentilium bring together the results of forty years spent by Boccaccio studying the myths of antiquity; the last two books offer a defence and illustration of poetry. The work is followed by an alphabetical list of place names in Latin literature compiled by Boccaccio under the title De montibus, sylvis, fontibus, lacubus... From the Pellissier de Féligonde library, with armorial bookplate and signature on the title. Earlier handwritten bookplates at head and foot of title. Spine missing, first board detached, stains and rubbing on boards, clasps missing, light spotting at head and bottom of volume. Moreau, II, n°24.
