A VENICE MAIOLICA VASE, CIRCA 1580; WORN, GLAZE AND MINOR MATERIAL LOSSES, FIRING DEFECTS
Decorated by an artist from the circle of Domenico da Venezia during the last quarter of the 16th century, the illustrated bowl can be traced back to the so-called Maestro dei Capelli Scapigliati (Master of the Scapigliati Hair) mentioned in the previous card. For comparison, see, in addition to the previous lot, a boccia with similar busts of a commoner and soldier in the collection of the Cini Foundation in Venice (M. Vitali, Omaggio a Venezia. Le ceramiche della Fondazione Cini, Faenza 1998, p. 93), the one in a private collection in Venice (A. Alverà Bortolotto, Maiolica a Venezia nel Rinascimento, Bergamo 1988, p. 82) and the one in Villa Cagnola in Varese (R. Ausenda in Maioliche in La collezione Cagnola. Arazzi, sculture, mobili, ceramiche, Busto Arsizio, 1999, pp. 151-219).
