A VENICE MAIOLICA VASE, CIRCA 1560; SLIGHTLY WORN, FEW DEFECTS, MINOR GLAZE DEFECTS
The trophy background, typical of Venetian kilns but elaborated with particular elegance by Mastro Domenico and his workshop, already appears to have been codified in the mid-16th century. In this case, the decorative repertoire is enriched by musical scores, perhaps used here to trace the date of execution. See, among the various possible comparisons, the apothecary vase signed 'Domenico di Venecia 1562' (M. P. Pavone, Maestro Domenico da Venezia e la spezieria del grande ospedale di Messina, in 'Faenza', 1985, no. 24, pp. 49, 60, fig. XIII) or the plate conserved in the Museo Internazionale delle Ceramiche in Faenza and published by Ravanelli Guidotti in 1998 (C. Ravanelli Guidotti, Omaggio a Venezia. Maioliche veneziane tra Manierismo e Barocco nelle raccolte del Museo Internazionale delle ceramiche in Faenza, Faenza 1998, pp. 115-117).
