Lot no. 25
BODIN (Jean). The Six Books of the Republic. S.l.n.n. [Genève, Claude Juge], 1577. In-8, marbled basane, spine decorated, red edges (18th century binding). Second edition, published surreptitiously in Geneva after the Paris original of 1576 with modifications by Simon Goulart, imposed by the Council of Geneva. This pirate edition appeared in the same year as the second authorised edition, published like the original by Jacques Dupuys.
Jean Bodin "dominated his century by the force of his political thought, the scope of his project and the firmness of his construction. In France, we had to wait for Montesquieu to find an equal. His contemporaries were not mistaken, who ensured the resounding success of La République throughout Europe as soon as it was published", writes Luce Giard (En français dans le texte, no. 68).
Mottling, worm damage to the corner of pp. 167-202, binding rubbed, top cover damaged, title crossed out.
