Lot no. 142
Bohemia, Silesia, circa 1710 / 30. A rare small transparent glass bowl on a foot, finely engraved with a wheel. Elongated bowl with a curved rim decorated with two shells on each side entirely decorated with small scenes and landscapes animated with characters and animals, some exotic or chinoiserie, the ends decorated, for one, with an architectural garden with a water feature and fountains, for the other, with a frame of lambrequins and foliage C, the centre left empty was intended to receive a monogram. Faceted baluster foot. The base is centred on a cinquefoil and the rim is edged with festoons. Height: 12 cm. This small bowl bears witness to a highly original form in Bohemian Baroque glassware. This type of shell bowl with a scalloped rim is listed in Langhamer's work, but very few have survived. The Corning Glass Museum in New York, for example, appears to possess only a late 19th-century model (inv. 81.3.123). Book consulted: A. Langhamer, Le Verre de Bohême, Paris, 2002, p 43. Expert: Cabinet Fligny Paris.
