RUSSIAN SEWING BOX KHOLMOGORY, 19TH CENTURY bone, carving, velvet 13.6 x 21.8 x 14.6 cm Kholmogorsk carved bone is a folk art formed and practised in the villages of the Kholmogorsk district in the Arkhangelsk region. The earliest known examples of products made in this way date back to the 17th century, but the carving techniques that distinguish this type of craft from others of a similar nature were not developed until the 18th century.
