TOBACCO BOX, ENGLAND, 17th CENTURY in pewter, square shape with canted corners and crenellated base, fitted with a quarter-round lid and nipple topped with a spherical socket. The body is decorated in high relief with four humorous scenes on the theme of tobacco, wine and the words TOBACCO'S A PHYSICIAN GOOD FOR THE SOVND SICKLY. The lid is decorated with flowers and stars and the handle bears the Latin inscription E.S.M.O / I.N /.N.U.B.I.B.U.S (I am in the clouds). The mould maker's countermark in a shield: a flower accompanied by the initials D.B.H, unidentified. The busts and bodies of the figures cast separately are held in place by tiny pegs that can be seen on the inside of the walls. An illegible founder's mark has been applied to the inside of one of the sides. (Very dark patina, complete with its painted lead interior tobacco press).
