A Transitional gilt-bronze mounted tulipwood, amaranth, sycamore and marquetry bonheur-du-jour, stamped by Leonard Boudin, the marquetry panels attributed to Charles Topino
The presence of Léonard Boudin's stamp on this bonheur-du-jour is a significant example of his work as a cabinetmaker and the practice of sub-contracting under the Ancien Régime.
Léonard Boudin had several colleagues work for him, including Denizot, Gilbert and Topino; our copy, with its decoration of utensils, is particularly evocative of the art of Charles Topino, master in 1773.
Topino supplied marquetry panels to cabinet-makers such as Boudin; the two worked closely together, and Boudin's order book mentions a large number of tables "with vase marquetry" supplied by Topino between 1772 and 1774. His role as supplier explains both the presence of the two stamps or, as in the case of our happiness of the day, that of the single stamp of the cabinet-maker who commissioned it.
A Happiness of the Day with a similar inlaid decoration is illustrated in S. Barbier Sainte Marie, Charles Topino, Les Éditions de l'Amateur, Paris, 2005, p. 67. A second example, not stamped, was sold at Christie's London on 1 February 2011, lot 4 (GBP 32,450).
