[BONHOMME (Jean). Traité de la cephalatomie ou description anatomique des parties que la tête renferme... Avignon, Girard, 1748. In-4, marbled fawn basane, spine decorated, red edges (Binding of the period). Frontispiece, 5 ff. (dedication, preface, approbation), 448 pp. 4 ff. of table. First edition, illustrated with 24 off-text engraved anatomical plates. This rare treatise is the most important publication by Jean Bonhomme, sworn surgeon of Avignon. It is dedicated to the Dean and Regent Doctors of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Avignon. The handsome, unsigned allegorical frontispiece features surgeon putti and a Latin motto that reads: Il disseèque les morts pour soigner les vivants [He dissects the dead to heal the living]. The anatomical plates, drawn and engraved after nature, show the parts of the brain, the arteries of the brain, the eyes, the mouth, the palate, the gullet, the external and internal ears, etc. Covers and corners worn.
