This elegant figure of a dancer representing Carlotta Zambelli, an Italian-born ballerina and star of the Paris Opéra, is part of Boris Frodmann-Cluzel's body of work dedicated to the art of dance. Standing on a point in a flowery costume, she played the role of Mimi Pinson in Reynaldo Hahn's ballet La Fête chez Thérèse, first performed on 16 February 1910.
After studying in St Petersburg and at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, the Russian sculptor Boris Frödman-Cluzel was recommended by Fabergé and, around 1907, worked in England at the Royal Court, for which he produced a series of statuettes of domestic animals.
In 1910, the Galerie Hébrard organised a monographic exhibition of small bronze statuettes by the sculptor under the title "Les Artistes de la Danse Russes et Français". Thanks to meticulous observation, Frödman-Cluzel's dancers, in a wide variety of attitudes, convey the truth of the gestures admired in Russian ballets, which were in vogue in Parisian and European artistic circles at the time.
Our bronze was undoubtedly signed and must have been stamped by the Hébrard foundry on the missing terrace.
