BOSCHINI (Marco). Il Regno tutto di Candia. S.l.n.n., 1651. Small folio, marbled basane, spine decorated, red edges (18th century binding). First edition of this rare atlas devoted entirely to Crete, published during the Candian War, which pitted the Republic of Venice against the Ottoman Empire from 1645 to 1669.
The work contains an engraved title, a frontispiece depicting the lion of Saint Mark overlooking Crete, a dedication leaf and 60 (out of 61) plates of maps, plans and bird's-eye views drawn and copper-engraved by Marco Boschini, including 8 fold-outs. The first is a detailed map of the island.
From the library of Alexandre Amé de Saint-Didier (1778-1850), prefect of Aube and Seine-et-Marne and peer of France under the July monarchy, with bookplate.
Missing folding plate no. 25, Città di Candia assediata (plate 24 is numbered 24/25); fine tear repaired on plate no. 33; headpieces missing, corners worn, spotting on boards.
Enclosed is a coloured and heightened proof of folding plate no. 2, Scoglio et For[tez]za di Garabuse, volante.
