BOSCO (Henri). L'Âne culotte. S.l., Le Livre contemporain, 1950. In-4, fawn morocco mosaiced with a loose black box design on birds and fantastic animals, covering the covers and spine, smooth spine, black suede lining and endpapers, gilt edges, cover and spine, black morocco jacket and slipcase (Creuzevault). This edition is illustrated with 40 original drypoints by Nicolas Eekman, whose realism perfectly complements Henri Bosco's text. Edition of 130 copies, this one nominative for Albert Malle. An exceptional copy enriched with 2 pencil and pen drawings of a hors-texte, one of the 10 first state suites in black and one of the 15 suites in bistre, both on Mûrier d'Annam, and a suite of 4 rejected drypoints. In addition, a handwritten recto verso sheet entitled Offrande à l'Amitié (Offering to Friendship) signed by Henri Bosco is included with the work. This is one of four copies that the author wrote and attached to a few copies of his book, this one dedicated to his friend Germaine Rémond. In addition, this copy contains the illustrated menu, a letter addressed to the members of the club and the list of original drawings and suites distributed after the 1950 General Meeting, annotated with the price and the names of the buyers. A very fine set of original drawings and rare suites, in a superb binding perfectly produced by Henri Creuzevault, at the height of his art in loose mosaics. Around 1950, Creuzevault perfected the technique of loose mosaic. "He sought a freer gesture and, as a result, a less fixed decoration [...]. [...] This period was rich in personal research, executed freely with a brush and Indian ink. The motif is integrated into the decor [...], in the manner of tapestries". As Maurice Toesca wrote in 1953, "the mosaic merges in a way with the morocco". The decoration, freer, lighter and more vivid, recalls the fabrics designed in the 1910s by Raoul Dufy for his friend the couturier Paul Poiret. Using this technique of unset mosaic Creuzevault designed models for Picasso's Buffon, Suzanne et le Pacifique, La Terre frottée d'ail, Le Bestiaire, L'Enchanteur pourrissant, etc., some of which were later adapted to form families. One example is the Bestiaire d'Apollinaire illustrated by Dufy, which appeared in the Gaston Gradis library (2011, no. 1), a major client and patron of Creuzevault. Creuzevault (C.), Henri Creuzevault, 1905-1971, VI, models nos. 199 and 200.
