Botany Gmelin, Samuel Gottlieb Historia Fucorum auctore Samuel Gottlieb Gmelin. With 35 folded copper plates. Copper plates and three original specimens mounted on paper. St. Petersbourg, Typographia Academiae Scientiarum, 1768. 9 vols. 239 p. 4°. Later restored cloth with gilt-stamped ribbon marker, fillets and coloured edges (rubbed and bumped). Very rare in the trade. At the age of 18 he completed his medical training at the University of Leiden, after which he lived on the coast in Holland for several years. It was there that his fascination with algae began and he made his first observations. In 1767 he moved to St. Petersburg, where he was appointed professor of botany. - Slight foxing throughout, margins browned. Overall a well-preserved copy with fine copper engravings.
