One of 3 printed variants of the first edition. - Adams II, 572 - Pritzel 8090 - Cf. Hunt 97 (Lyon edition). - "Arthur Hort (...) calls Scaliger the most brilliant scholar who ever contributed to the elucidation of Theophrastus" (Hunt 97). "Botanical science in its broadest aspects received an enormous impetus in Greece under the leadership of Theophrastus and his disciples. He was the founder of this science and one of the greatest botanists of all time. (...) Theophrastus is said to have written more than 200 treatises, of which his two botanical works, the History of Plants and the Causes of Plants, are the most important that have survived." - Title page somewhat stained, name on title, small backing in lower margin.
