Bll., 56 p., 9 intertitles and 100 plates, 1 nn. Leaf (monitum). Folio (51.5 x 36 cm). Modern full marocco in the style of the period on 7 bands with gilt-stamped cover fillets, gilt-stamped spine label, rich vegetal spine gilding, standing edge fillets, three gilt edges and marble endpapers. First edition. - Nissen BBI, 1997. Stafleu/Cowan 15.131. Pritzel 9499. Great Flower Books p. 144. Dunthorne 309. - Extremely splendid copy of this masterpiece of botanical book art, which impresses with its excellent colouring of the plates. In addition to the intertitles heightened in red and gold, the first word of all the titles of the plates, set in capitals, is also heightened in gold. The marvellous full-page engravings were engraved by Johann Jacob Haid and Johann Elias Haid after drawings by Georg Dionysius Ehret. With the mezzotint portraits of J.J. Haid, Ehret and Trew. - Our copy contains before the 2 vols. Address to the reader in Latin and a two-column leaf with a parallel German-Latin text signed in print as J.J. Haid, Augsburg 1750, followed by a likewise two-column "Index plantarum, quarum imagines pinxit D. Ehretus suntque Norimbergae in Museo D. D. Treu". - Partly with watermark with crowned fleur-de-lis shield and initials J. H. & Z. (Jan Honig & Zoonen). - Nissen considers the Plantae Selectae to be the most important botanical work ever printed in Germany. C. J. Trew, a doctor in Nuremberg and amateur botanist, admired the talent and skills of his younger compatriot Georg Ehret, a gardener and flower painter. The present work is the most important collaboration between the two. Trew died in 1769 and was therefore unable to complete the last three parts. From then on, Benedict Christian Vogel, Professor of Botany at the University of Altdorf, took over. - Without Vogel's very rare addendum and his portrait (published in two Decuriae 1790-1792). - Portraits and text inconspicuously brownstained. The plates only sporadically somewhat (finger)stained. Overall an extremely well-preserved copy with splendid contemporary colouring of the plates.
