BOTANIK - Volkmann, Georg Anton. Sciagraphia et Icones Plantarum Indigenarum, maxime vero Exoticar [...] à vivis depicta... Manuscript with 245 full-page watercolours and Latin inscriptions in manuscript. [Silesia, probably Liegnitz,] c. 1700. folio (32 × 22 cm). Leather binding circa 1840 with gilt cover label "Hr Ct Dubois. Buttes." (Somewhat rubbed and stained, inner joints reinforced). Extensive botanical manuscript by the well-known Silesian physician and naturalist Georg Anton Volkmann (1664-1721), who is still known today as the author of the geological work "Silesia Subterranea", printed in 1720. He was the son of the botanist Israel Volkmann (1636-1706), whose fundamental collection "Phytologia magna" he continued. The series, comprising a total of 10 volumes and edited between 1666 and 1716, was never printed; the manuscripts are now in the Saxon State and University Library (SLUB) Dresden: Mscr.Dresd.B116-125. The connection between the present manuscript and this work remains a task for research. - The very neatly executed and carefully coloured drawings in this volume, some with handwritten inscriptions on the banderole. Somewhat browned, slight finger and damp marks in the margins in places. Overall in excellent condition. - Provenance: Probably looted property from the Napoleonic Wars. Ownership note by a French officer "à l'Etat major du 5 corps d'armée à Breslau, le 12 may 1808. Later added ownership note "à Ami Dubois", dated July 1836. - Since then privately owned in Switzerland.
