This historic circumnavigation, led by Louis-Antoine de Bougainville from November 1766 to March 1769 under the royal flag, marked a major milestone in eighteenth-century scientific exploration. The expedition, which crossed the Pacific between the Straits of Magellan and the Philippines before returning via the Indian Ocean, brought together a team of eminent scientists: the astronomer Pierre-Antoine Véron, who was responsible for determining longitudes, the engineer Charles Routier de Romainville, who was in charge of cartography, and the botanist Philibert Commerson, who discovered the flower in Brazil that was later named bougainvillea. The voyage led to the discovery of the Vahitahi and Akiaki atolls, and considerably enriched the geographical knowledge of Oceania and European naturalist collections. The edition is illustrated with 21 out-of-text maps and plans and 3 plates. The second volume closes with a "Vocabulary of Taiti Island (sic)". A complete copy of the third volume containing the French translation of the Journal d'un voyage autour du monde made by Joseph Banks and Daniel Charles Solender between 1768 and 1771, presented on the title as a Supplément au voyage de M. de Bougainville. This unillustrated volume includes an "Abridged Vocabulary of the Language of the Island of Otahiti", a "Letter from M. de Commerson to M. de La Lande" on Madagascar, and a reflection on "the possibility of a passage from the North Sea to the South Sea through the northern seas". The title is hardback. Beautiful set in uniform contemporary bindings. A very well preserved copy. The two leaves of the epistle to the king, which should be at the head of the first volume, have been bound by mistake in the Preliminary Discourse (after page xxxiv and before page xliij) and some leaves of this discourse are bound out of order.
