BOULLE PENDULE ON PLINTH Louis XIV/Regency, Paris, ca. 1715/20. The movement signed Lancelot à Paris (François Lancelot, mentioned in Paris in 1684). Trapezoidal wooden case with Boulle marquetry. Red-backed tortoiseshell inlaid with finely engraved brass inserts in the form of arabesques, leaf masks, birds, and animals. Gilt bronze fittings in the form of foliate scrolls, decorative friezes, flamed vases, herm pilasters, and a figural finial in the form of a triumphant angel (trumpet missing). Door decoration in the form of Helios in a chariot drawn by genies and attendants of the sun god. The case is arched at the top and has a retracted top section. The corner posts at the bottom are curved in an S-shape and rest on reclining bronze horses with saddle cloths. On a matching plinth with four curved supports. Relief dial with white enamel cartouches for the Roman hours. Engraved minute track with Arabic numerals. Movement with verge escapement and half-hour strike on bell. Thread suspension with fine adjustment on the dial. Pendulum and key missing. 68 × 27 × 135 cm. Movement modified. Some of the bronzes are later additions. Some losses to the case. Internal engravings worn. Rear door replaced. Certificate: Expert opinion by Prof. Dr. Hans Ottomeyer, Ottobrunn, May 16, 2025. The shape of the case corresponds to the classic style of Louis XIV/Régence, but is strongly accentuated by the horse figures on which the clock rests. The basic design and individual motifs can be attributed to the work of Charles-André Boulle (1642–1732). See a similar clock from the Musée Grobet-Labadié in Marseille. However, that clock does not feature reclining horses (Tardy: La pendule française. Part 1, Des origines au Louis XV. Paris 1974, p. 89).
