The best emeralds from Panjshir now rival those from any other source. Like the Lilze deposits in certain other regions, the Afghan emeralds were apparently formed in a continental suture zone. The gemmological properties of Panjshir emeralds are consistent with those from other lo- calities. Chemically, Panjshir emeralds are similar to those from Muzo, Colombia. These emeralds have a very bright, brilliant, homogeneous colour, typical of this origin. Emerald mining in the Panjshir Valley of Afghanistan is thriving. The best emeralds from Panjshir compete with emeralds from any other source today. Lilze deposits from some other areas, the Afghan emeralds ap- parently formed in a continental suture zone.
