Lot no. 24
ENGRAVED BRACELET EDGED WITH BRAIDING
A bracelet of great jewellery mastery in 18k (750 thousandths) yellow gold with a foliage motif engraved at the tip using extremely fine lines. This motif gives the central part of the jewel an amati effect on smooth gold strips. Falling shape. Very fine filigree weaving around the edges. Solid piece in excellent condition. The very finely linked links on the bar give the jewel incomparable suppleness and a perfect fit on the wrist.
Dimensions: 18.5 x 2 cm (largest central part).
Gross weight: 66.5 g.
The braiding that forms the edge of this bracelet is one of the oldest techniques in jewellery. It consists of braided strands of gold wire creating a double square chain, which can be found on many pieces of jewellery from ancient Greece, particularly from the Hellenistic period. The technique of creating these square-braided chains has survived the centuries, but was little used during the Middle Ages and Modern Times. It was the 19th century that made this chain popular right up to the present day by reproducing jewellery in antique fashion, the famous "Antique Revival". All the codes of antique jewellery were imitated with less finesse and in a more industrial manner. The master chain-makers of the twentieth century seized on this to create a basic model, the square column chain.
